"Wish I'd started earlier..."

Nice comment in the showers at work (sorry for putting that image into your heads) - colleague in his 40's, after we'd had a bit of a chat about our cycle in and compared notes on bikes (God we're dull aren't we?!), he said:  "I only wish I'd started biking to work years ago". I assumed he was talking about physique. "You mean - in terms of fitness?" I asked. "No", he said, "so I wouldn't have had so many miserable years on the tube".

Sort of know what he means. Once you're out there above ground it seems inconceivable to be forced to go under there every day.

And it made me think - it's never too late to start. Then I had my shower. The shower room was so hot, by the way, that I think (again, forgive the unpleasant image) I was more sweaty after it than before.

Hahahaha, nice one. You've totally got that right....you'll never be as young as you are today, right?

Yes- thanks Darryl and welcome to the blog. At the risk of getting a bit deep, I've always thought that it's good to remember this - in ten years time you'll marvel at how young you were ten years ago - I.e now - so there's no point in feelin old at any age ..... If you get me.

I'm just glad it was only bikes you were comparing in the showers... wasn't sure what I was getting myself in for when I started reading this post! (sorry, I'll get my mind out of the gutter now)

Your friend is absolutely right of course, the feeling of zipping along the roads is much nicer than stifling on the Central Line every morning, but the fact that so many people continue to do so is, I fear, testament to how the majority of people feel about the prospect of cycling on London's roads...

Yup, guess I was edging on to dodgy ground there mentioning showers and comparisons ... I'll try to leave such images out of it for the time being! After reading your comment, I was just about to recommend you had a look at the excellent article about the National Travel Survey I'd seen recently - then I realised it was yours! So for anyone else who reads this, please do look at Mark's brilliant thoughts here: http://ibikelondon.blogspot.com/2010/08/national-travel-survey-cyclings-canary.html
